REVIEW: Bummis Dimple nappy
The products were provided to Eco Parents Australia to review. This is not a paid review. The opinions are those of Eco Parents Australia.
Small booster sold separately ($10).
In this review I use the Bummis Dimple nappy on my 23-month-old daughter. She is 11 kg. Plus you have the chance to win one for yourself.
Using the Bummis Dimple nappy
The Bummis Dimple nappy is a fitted nappy and comes with a separate booster (the long one pictured throughout this review). Bummis also make additional boosters (sold separately) that allow the simple fitted nappy to easily convert to a night time nappy. Having boosters separate (not attached) allow you to adjust absorbency as needed and are quick to dry. The booster/s can be placed inside or outside the fitted nappy. I personally like to place boosting between the fitted nappy and the waterproof cover, rather than IN the fitted nappy. I find this keeps fitted nappies snug and reduces leg and waist gaps – which helps minimise leaks. It will also depend if your bub has skinny or chubby legs. Experiment and see which works best for you.
Many parents like a fitted nappy for night because it offers great absorbency and containment. It can also be easier than a flat with a snappi (which I often use). The Dimple nappy is very absorbent and more trim than my regular flat or prefolds boosted for night use. Many regular modern cloth nappies are not as effective for the long period required for nighttime use. However, some can be brilliant if the right adjustments, such as boosting, are introduced. In fact, you can use the Dimple boosters to boost your regular nappies for night use (although I did not try this).
I like to rinse out the Dimple nappy in cold water as soon as I take it off in the morning as my little one has strong urine. Sometimes I leave the nappy to soak in water until I wash it. As my laundry room is outside and downstairs, I rinse the nappy in my bathroom sink then pop it into my nappy bucket in the bathroom.
The Dimple smaller booster (sold separately) has stay-dry polyester on one side and organic cotton on the other. Bummis say this is as absorbent as microfibre terry but easier to wash and is a 100% natural fibre. If you use this booster against baby’s skin you have the choice of which side to use.
The long booster is included with the Dimple fitted nappy. The smaller booster is sold separately.

If you have a younger bub, or multiple children in cloth nappies, you’ll be washing every 1-2 days. I only have my daughter in cloth now and given she is toilet training; we are only using cloth nappies for daycare and sleeps. I have transitioned to washing a load of nappies every 1-2 days to washing 1-2 nappies with a load of regular laundry.
Whether you wash with other nappies or other clothes, be sure to use the appropriate amount of detergent, keep the water temperature under 40 degrees and ensure they are well rinsed during the cycle to remove the detergent. As usual the general rules of nappies apply – no bleach or fabric softeners.
You can add the Dimple nappy to the dryer if needed. I use wool dyrer balls and use a delicate setting. Otherwise, use the wonderful properties of Mother Nature and hang them on the line. I like to hang them over in half to reduce the weight on the elastic and I just clip together a snap so I don’t need a peg. I’ve found this nappy does not get crunchy like other nappies can when dried on the line in the sun.
On a clear day here in summer in Brisbane, Queensland, I find if I hang this nappy out in the morning, it is dry and ready to use that night. This is not always possible, so a couple of ‘night’ nappies in rotation can be a good idea.
Other booster and things
You can make use of other boosters you might have on hand and use them with the Dimple fitted nappy. Just lay them inside the fitted nappy or put on the fitted nappy on and lay the booster on the cover and put on the cover. I like to user a wool booster (not lanolised) inside my fitted nappy for an extra natural, super absorbent layer that is not at all bulky. A micro fleece liner can also make poo clean up easier. The Bummis Dimple nappy can be used perfectly well with the boosters it comes with the things I’ve just mentioned are simply other options.
The Dimple nappy is not waterproof. The fitted nappy by itself offers a comfortable and totally plastic free option around the house. You can add a waterproof cover of your choice. I use a lanolised wool cover because I use this fitted nappy for night sleeps (a 12 hour period). My preference is a felted wool wing style cover, but I also have a knitted cover too. I love using wool covers. These are lanolised to give them waterproofing power. It can be a little daunting to start with wool covers. But once you are practiced at lanolising and have perfected your preferred technique it is a breeze. The best thing about lanolising is that you only need to wash and lanolised every so often. I can get 4-6 weeks between washing and lanolising my wool cover. For more details on lanolising wool covers see my blog article here.
- Be sure to tuck in (hide) the Velcro of any other nappy covers in the same wash load. Velcro may catch on the Bummis Dimple nappy and cause it to fuzz.
- While a fitted nappy is an excellent choice for longer stretches, they can take longer to dry than a flat nappy.
The nappy comes with a cardboard tag with plastic fastener.
Apikali owners Tennille and James have four children. Established as a means for the family to help provide for their special needs daughter, Abbey, they began stocking modern cloth nappies.
